Editado em 1999, o Robotics Invention System 1.5, destinava-se de igual modo ao utilizador doméstico, ou seja fora do contexto educacional. A caixa com com 717 peças, continha a versão 1.0 do RCX, mas sem a possibilidade de ligar a um transformador, ou seja, não havia a tomada do conector. Este RCX ficou conhecido com o RCX 1.5, embora possua inscrito a designação 1.0 . A sua programação era feita com o RCX code, ao contrário da programação Robolab da versão educativa. Por fim refira-se que este conjunto ainda usava a torre de ligação à porta com, nas comunicações com o RCX.

Uma curiosidade, habitualmente chamam ao RCX como Robotics Command Explorer, o que está errado. Desde da sua criação, e tal foi dito numa entrevista por um dos elementos da equipa criativa, que RCX quer dizer Robotics Command System, mas colocoram o X no fim para dar um aspecto mais tecnológico. No User Guide deste conjunto, refere na página 4, exactamente o nome correcto do RCX, Robotics Command System (consultem o documento no link mais abaixo, junto à imagem).
