A LEGO Group, em parceria, no hardware, com o Instituto de Tecnologia de Massachusetts (Massachusetts Institute of Technology- MIT) e a National Instruments (NI), no software, lança em setembro ano de 1998 o LEGO® RCX - Robotic Command System (originalmente denominado como protótipo como Robotics Control System), numa gama denominada MindStorms®. Este é o primeiro robot educativo autónomo criado para o ensino das STEAM. Foi apresentado em janeiro de 1998 na feira internacional do brinquedo em Londres e comercializado mundialmente com o nome de Robotics Invention System (RIS). Uma larga gama de kits educativos e para o usurário comum foram então desenvolvidos... mas disso falaremos mais tarde. John Holbrook, cidadão americano que tem dedicado largas horas ao estudo e divulgação do robot RCX da LEGO® Education, possui uma página online com uma apresentação muito sucinta mas muito boa sobre este primeiro tijolo programável de LEGO®. Chama-se a página e o texto nela inscrito " O RCX, 19 anos depois" (escrita em 2017). O leitor deve aceder à mesma para obter um conhecimento básico sobre este robot. John Holbrook, an American citizen who has spent long hours studying and publicizing the LEGO® Education RCX robot, has an online page with a very succinct but very good presentation on this first LEGO® programmable brick.
